Service |
Below are descriptions of the services at St. Columba’s, and the essential
roles parishioners can play, as chalice bearers, crucifers, readers,
acolytes, ushers, and members of the Altar Guild. Please consider taking an
active part in our worship.
We use the Book of Common Prayer: the red book on the back of each chair.
The blue Hymnal 1982 is used at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service. At all
services, ushers hand out bulletins to guide people through the rituals.
Hymn numbers are also posted above the organ.
Sunday Services
On Sunday, Rite I is used at the 8:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist Service, and Rite
II is used at the 10:00 a.m. There is no music at 8:00 a.m.; organ music,
sung hymns, and service music accompany the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist. There is a
nursery for children under three, and Sunday School for older children, both
at 10 a.m.
CHILDREN’S CHAPEL
LISTEN * LEARN * LIVE
Starting Sunday, June 1 at 10am in the Parish Hall
A liturgical service designed for children led by
Monica Daniels, St. Columba’s Director of Children and Family Ministry. This
service will be for children ages 4 - 9. The children will join their
families in church for Communion.
Saturday “Alive @ Five” Service
Held on the first Saturday of the month, “Alive @ Five” is a simple,
accessible Eucharist designed to be especially friendly to children and
families. A pot-luck dinner often follows.
Wednesday Evening Eucharist and Healing Service
The Wednesday evening 5:30 Eucharist includes the Litany for Healing.
Printed sheets are available in the back of the church. After the prayers
and the confession, members of the congregation are invited to come forward
to receive a special prayer for healing and to be anointed with oil.
Morning Prayer
Morning Prayer, Rite II, is at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday,
and at 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday. Clergy and lay people gather to read this
brief service, which may be conducted by members of the parish. New leaders
are always welcome and training is available for anyone interested.
Acolytes
Carrying the cross (as crucifer) and serving as candle-bearers, acolytes
take an active role in the Eucharist service, learning about the Church’s
practices as they serve. Young people are especially encouraged to
participate in this way. Anyone interested should contact Nancy Piazza at
cinchomflt1@verizon.net.
Altar Guild
A quiet ministry, the Altar Guild is responsible for the care of linens and
vessels and for the preparation of the altar for two Holy Eucharist services
on Sunday. Guild members work in pairs, learning from one another as well as
from training sessions. Contact Patty Duke
pattydukedc@verizon.net;
847-0448) or David Chandler
(elmfarm@cox.net; 683-5884) for more information.
Eucharistic Ministers
During the
Offertory Hymn, a member of the congregation joins the altar party in the
sanctuary to serve as chalice bearer during Holy Eucharist. To discuss
becoming a part of this prayerful and uplifting ministry, contact Kathryn
Warren (8 a.m. service) at 847-5571 or
kwarren@stcolumbaschapel.org,
or Jeff Richard (10 a.m. service) at
jlrams@cox.net
Readers
Lay persons
read the appointed lessons from the Old and New Testaments and lead the
Prayers of the People at both Sunday services. If you would like to
participate in this way, please contact Nancy Piazza (10 a.m. service) at
cinchomflt1@verizon.net, or
Kathryn Warren (8 a.m. service) at 847-5571 or
kwarren@stcolumbaschapel.org.
Ushers
Two ushers
are assigned to greet worshipers and distribute bulletins before each Sunday
service. They also bring the bread and wine to the altar, collect the
offering, supervise the Sunday School arrival, and assist the congregation
as needed. Following the service, ushers prepare the offering for the
assistant treasurer. Ushers are always needed. If you wish to participate,
please contact Kate Field
kate@katherinefield.com.
Flowers
Donations for
the flowers on the St. Columba’s altar are given weekly as memorials and/or
thanksgivings, with names and dedications listed in the bulletin. For
festivals such as Christmas, Easter, and Harvest Sunday, parishioners work
together to decorate the chapel. To get involved, or to make a memorial or
thanksgiving flower donation, contact Patty Duke at 847-0448 or
pattydukedc@verizon.net
