St. Columba's Outreach Ministry responds to needs in the community, nation, and world, providing a helping hand in the spirit of Jesus Christ through prayer and action by members of the congregation. It also recommends charitable expenditures to the St. Columba’s Vestry. Some of the agencies we support, either financially or with the involvement of parish members as volunteers, include:

  • Lucy’s Hearth: Transitional Housing for Women with Children. In addition to providing financial support through our Outreach Ministry, St. Columba’s parishioners and their friends attend wreath workshops in the Parish Hall (the first Thursday and Friday of December) to make some amazing Christmas wreaths and center pieces for Lucy’s Hearth’s annual Wreath Sale, their major fund raiser. St. Columba’s annual “Giving Tree” event at Christmas provides gifts and clothing for children through the Adopt-A-Family program at Lucy’s Hearth.

  • Salvation Army: St. Columba’s parishioners purchase and donate toiletries and food monthly. Food for the Food Pantry is collected monthly on the first Sunday.

  • Women’s Resource Center: Provides assistance to Women and Children who are Victims of Domestic Violence. St. Columba’s Outreach Ministry provides financial support.

  • “Soup’s On.” With the goal to simply to feed people, this Newport community program, under the direction of Emmanuel Church, has blossomed into a cooperative ministry of 19 churches of 10 different denominations working together to provide at least one meal every day of the month to an average of 100 people. St. Columba’s Outreach Ministry provides monthly financial support and our parishioners volunteer to assist with the program.

  • Martin Luther King Center: Provides a wide range of social services, meals and food in our community for those in need. In addition to providing financial support through our Outreach Ministry, St. Columba’s parishioners volunteer at the Center for the breakfast meal program and other community services.

  • McKinney Shelter: Provides social services and emergency housing in our community. St. Columba’s Outreach Ministry provides financial support to the shelter.

  • Plan International USA: Sponsors needy children around the world. St. Columba’s Outreach Ministry sponsors two children; Mohamed a 13 year old in Sudan and Zeynabou a 12 year old in Niger.

  • Angel Food: A St. Columba’s “in-reach” program, (with volunteers currently under the leadership of Nina Dotterer) which provides homemade meals to members of the St. Columba’s parish, at both happy and struggling times. Please contact the Parish Office if you would like to volunteer with Nina to prepare meals or if you are aware of someone in the parish for whom the Angel Food program would make a difference.

  • Episcopal Charities: Our Bishop’s discretionary relief fund supporting, through the RI Diocese, charitable agencies and programs throughout the state.

  • Episcopal Relief and Development: Provides aid and relief in this country and in developing countries.

  • Baby Steps: Early Childhood Learning for Expectant Parents and toddlers. St. Columba’s Outreach Ministry provides financial support to the shelter.

  • First Responders: On occasion, our Outreach Partners are looking for volunteers to help them through an unanticipated event or to lend a hand at a community work party. This program is a great way for members of our parish to show their support and to get involved…as “First Responders”. If you are willing to receive a call from St. Columba’s.
